Music is LOVE

When I heard a colleague comment that to him this photo says, “music is love”, it was the best response I could hope for. Preparing for gigs is a labor of love because it’s all the umentionables. Staying healthy, warming up, practicing, rehearsing, adjusting song keys, spending money, developing arrangements, preparing charts, hustling for gigs, scheduling venues, advertising, booking musicians, negotiating money, maintaining equipment, traveling, arriving, setting up, sound checking…and then: the lights go down, the audience is quiet, and the very first note sets the evening. And for a few brief hours all the hard work that takes place between gigs translates into the sweet spot. Singing for me, is love. When I’m in the zone with the players and when the audience experiences that zone too – it’s a good feeling of music love, that says it all. We had a huge gregarious response to another *sold out* crowd this past weekend at the Classic Wineseller in Waynesville. Everytime we perform there it gets better and better. The special thing about Waynesville, also where I live, it’s jam packed with music and perfoming arts lovers, semi-retired artists and long time audience participants. There is something to be said about the culture of an audience and this is the main reason I live here. This community is ALIVE with entreprenuership and the arts. That alone lends to an ambitious and captivating energy. Small business owners lining Main Street and surrounding, right into the neighboring towns, keeps a year ’round enthusiasm that never tires. Satin Steel Jazz has truly taken off thanks in many ways to the local community of Waynesville and I am personally very grateful for the opportunity!! October 12th: – we return to kick off October’s local Jazz Festival (spearheaded in 2012 by myself and Richard Miller). “In Mid Air” featuring Brian Felix, Bryan White, Justin Watt and guest, Harry Schulz. November 9th: we’ll be at the Frog Level Brewery featuring newcomer jazz pianist, Simon George from Asheville, Zack Page and myself. Open to the public, with the best beer in the region. See our schedule here: http://www.evehaslam.com/gigs Until next time, I deeply thank you all for allowing SSJ to grow. Can’t wait for my next first note.
